Department of Physical Education and Sports of the VŠB - Technical University of Ostrava

The Department of Physical Education and Sports (KTVS) is an all-university department providing physical education lessons as a teaching subject. The Department also manages and organizes the sport activities of students during their leisure time, runs the activities of the University Sports Club and organizes winter and summer courses for students. Other activities are providing physical education classes in a the major Sports Management and special physical education for the Faculty for Safety Engineering.

Currently, the Department’s main task is to provide compulsory and non-compulsory physical education for students at all faculties of VŠB-TUO, and in cooperation with the Faculty of Economics to teach specialized subjects as given in the bachelor study programme for the major Sports Management, as well as to teach special physical education for the Faculty of Safety Engineering. The coaching activities help to fulfil the tasks of the University Sports Club (VSK VŠB-TUO).

Currently, there are 19 internal teachers at KTVS, plus 5 external teachers for teaching specialized Sports Management subjects. The Sports Management major has the same conception as other majors of the Faculty of Economics. Cooperation between KTVS and the Faculty of Economics is on a very high level. Similarly, cooperation between KTVS and the Faculty of Safety Engineering is developing very well, thus opening a new area for KTVS professional work.

At present, first-year students of all faculties have compulsory physical education. The students can choose from the following 20 sports: badminton, basketball, martial arts, cycling, floorball, indoor football, handball, climbing, yoga, jogging, aerobics, bodybuilding, ice-hockey, swimming, table tennis, tennis, rowing, volleyball, relaxation and performance dance. Based on their own choice, they may choose not only the sport itself, but also the day, time, sport facility or maybe also the teacher. Non-compulsory education is provided through the wide availability of winter and summer courses, plus a number of afternoon and evening (sometimes weekend) sports clubs. Aerobics and bodybuilding are the most popular among students.

Some 7,500 students attend physical education classes each academic year, out of which about 1,000 students attend non-compulsory education. KTVS organizes 15 winter and 10 summer courses each year, with about 700 participants.

The University Sports Club organizes 20 sport areas and has almost 600 members, a vast majority of them are university students. VSK VŠB-TUO athletes participate in competitions of different levels, from the recreational level all the way to top competitions. The most successful representatives are the indoor football players (First League) and the cross-country skiing team (First League). Another important success definitely is that thanks to the professionalism of its teachers, KTVS has gained accreditation for skiing, aerobics and climbing instructor training.
Physical Education lessons, VSK VŠB-TUO activities and sports recreation of both students and staff is organized mostly in VŠB-TUO sports facilities. These include an aerobics hall, fitness centre, sports hall for team sports, two gyms located on the university campus, and a new multi-purpose sports hall with three tennis courts, a floorball area and twelve badminton courts. Outside facilities include four tennis courts, two beach volleyball courts, a football field with artificial grass surface, a tennis practice wall and two asphalt fields for handball and football-tennis.

The sports complex, which is situated on the university campus, is one of the best-equipped university facilities in the Czech Republic. The positive approach of the school management allows students to use all sports facilities for compulsory and non-compulsory education, and it provides KTVS with excellent conditions to fulfil its main aim: to make physical education and sports an integral part of the lifestyle of VŠB – TUO students and graduates.
