Foreign nationals in the Czech Republic are required to have health insurance. Residence in the territory of the Czech Republic without insurance is in breach of Czech law and the individual is threatened with recourse against violation. Act 326/1999 Coll., on the stay of foreign nationals on the territory of the Czech Republic imposes on foreign nationals the obligation to supply proof of their ability to pay medical expenses.
Foreign nationals without permanent residence in the Czech Republic who are not employed in the Czech Republic cannot participate in public health insurance and in most cases must have travel health insurance cover, which is independent of public health insurance and is based on a contract between the insured person and an insurer.
Should you be requesting - from abroad - a permit to stay in the Czech Republic for longer than 90 days and proof of your having travel medical insurance is required, such insurance shall cover the cost of necessary and immediate health care. The sum assured shall be at least 60.000,- EUR. Along with proof of your having travel medical insurance, you will be required to submit a notarised Czech translation of your insurance contract and its general conditions. Upon request, you are also obliged to submit proof that you have paid the insurance premium for the entire period of your requested stay.
If you are already in the Czech Republic and are applying for renewal of your long-stay visa or long-term residence permit, you will be required to submit proof of travel medical insurance providing comprehensive health care from an insurer licensed to provide such insurance in the Czech Republic and it must be taken out in the scope of complex healthcare.
Make sure that your insurance policy: is valid in the entire Schengen area if applying for a Schengen visa, is not written by hand, contains correct data about yourself, the length of stay and premium amount. Inquire whether the diplomatic mission maintains a list of authorized insurance companies.
