Summary
Students are supposed to achieve basic knowledge in design of prestressed load bearing structures. Students get to know effect of prestressing on structures and technology of pre-tensioned and post-tensioned prestressed concrete. Students are acquainted with design of pre-stressing using different methods and with changes of prestressing. Students get knowledge about assessment of prestressed structure according to ultimate and serviceability limit state.
Learning Outcomes of the Course Unit
After completing this subject, students will be able to understand and apply the following skills and topic areas:
- design and assessment of prestressed concrete elements and structures;
- prestressed elements and structures of bridges, civil and industrial buildings.
Course Contents
Lectures:

1. Principle of prestressed concrete. Effect of prestressing on structures, equivalent load method.
2. Statically determinate and indeterminate effect of prestressing. Pressure line, concordant cable, linear transformation of cable.
3. Design of prestressing using load balancing method. Design using limitation of normal stress. Design using concordant cable.
4. Basic terminology, prestressing reinforcement. Technology of post tensioned prestressed concrete. Prestressing systems and its components. Single cable and multi cable systems and manufacturing procedure.
5. Technology of pre tensioned concrete.
6. Short term changes of prestressing. Changes of prestressing due to shrinkage, slip in anchoring, elastic deformation, progressive prestressing. Short term changes due to relaxation of reinforcement.
7. Long term changes of prestressing. Changes of prestressing due to reinforcement relaxation and concrete creep and shrinkage.
8. Time dependent analysis. Limitation of normal stress. Cable detaining.
9. Bending moment load bearing capacity. State of decompression. Basic stress, basic prestressing force.
10. Analysis of ultimate and serviceability limit state using initial stress.
11. Shear force and torsion load bearing capacity. Shear before crack formation. Shear after crack formation. Strut and tie model. Interaction of internal forces.
12. Serviceability limit state. Limitation of stress. Limitation of cracks. Limitation of deflection.
13. Analysis of anchoring zone, zone under anchors, anchoring with cohesion.
14. Material characteristics, concrete, grouting mortar, reinforcing and prestressing reinforcement.
