Summary
A lecture series covering the development of European and Czech Baroque architecture of the 17th and 18th centuries. The lecture will focus on the different phases of Baroque style, the main protagonists and key architectural works. A substantial part of the lectures will be devoted to the development of architecture in the Czech lands. Students will learn the main topics of contemporary architectural practice - sacral, palace, residential and fortification architecture. They will get an idea of the transformation of the expressive means of Baroque architecture, the development of the solution of structural problems and the use of building materials; they will also have the ability to take this knowledge into account in the independent interpretation of building monuments from this period;
Learning Outcomes of the Course Unit
Student demonstrates knowledge:
- basic periodization, stylistic characteristics and basic orientation
- development of design principles
- professional terminology

Student can:
- style and approximate building monuments in style
- characterize building styles of individual epochs
- to compare and specify the distinctive features of individual regional schools
- when interpreting specific architectural works, take into account the contemporary cultural, social and spiritual situation
- identify iconic artworks significant for individual epochs and styles
- recognize and evaluate the quality of architecture
