Qualification Requirements and Regulations
Qualification Requirements:
Finished secondary education with secondary school-leaving exam.
Regulations:
The Czech educational system is regulated by the Higher Education Act (Act 111/1998). Studies at VSB-TUO are regulated by the Statute of VSB – Technical University of Ostrava.
Profile of the Branch
The technical field of study Fire Protection Engineering and Industrial Safety is part of the degree programme Fire Protection and Industrial Safety. It is classified into the group of security fields of study. From the point of view of International Standard Classification of Education ISCED-97, the field of study belongs to the narrow fields of education, 86 – Security services, and to the detailed fields of education, 861 – Protection of persons and property. The curriculum consists of subjects of the theoretical, scientific and technical foundations of the field that focus on the study of origin, development and control of fires and other incidents and on the proposing of preventive measures to eliminate them and to reduce their consequences. In addition to the compulsory subjects, the curriculum further contains specialized subjects of the field concerned that enable the student to focus better on fire suppression and prevention, including civil protection and industrial safety. The study in the field of study is designed for the students with mainly technical ability who are interested in getting education on the Bachelor’s degree level in the area of prevention and suppression in fire protection, civil protection and industrial safety.
Key Learning Outcomes
Key Lerning Outcomes are Expressed in following Structure: Knowledge, Skills, General competencies
Knowledge:
At the beginning of study, the student acquires the needed knowledge of subjects of scientific and technical foundations of the field, i.e. especially of mathematics, physics, chemistry, engineering drawing, machines and equipment, building constructions, statics, and others. The study of technical subjects is supplemented by subjects from the areas of law, economics, social sciences and work with people. Part of study is teaching the use of computers in engineering practice in the command of force, drafting of operational plans and other documentation, fire safety design of structures and technologies. This base of study is followed by the specialized subjects providing knowledge in a rather wide context of fire prevention, fire suppression and safety. The credit system of study enables, through a suitable selection of compulsorily optional and optional subjects, to focus the specialization of students according to interest and job possibilities. Compulsory subjects of the curriculum will ensure that all graduates in the field concerned satisfy the Common Minimum Standards for the Education of Specialists in the Area of Safety and Security according to the recommendation of National Security Council of 3 July 2007. All graduates in the field concerned will also satisfy conditions of Required knowledge and skills for acquiring the professional qualification according to Section 11 of Act No. 133/1985 Coll. on fire protection. During studies, students can complete optional subjects and practical training leading to gaining professional qualification for work in the Fire and Rescue Service according to Section 72 of Act 133/1985 Coll. By completing the field of study the student will also obtain knowledge needed for the future obtaining of authorisation in the field of structural fire safety.
Skills:
By completing the subjects and practical training in the area of fire prevention the graduate is able above all to assess the hazards of fire, explosion and other incidents in buildings and technologies and to propose needed preventive measures to prevent them and to ensure the safety of persons. Required knowledge and skills for the preparation and evaluation of relevant documentation (in the phases of planning, implementation and operation of structures and technologies). After completing the subjects and practical training in the area of fire suppression the graduate is able above all to analyse the on-scene situation, to perform and manage firefighting operations and rescue of persons using the present-day special fire appliances and equipment, to organize activities of communication, mechanical and chemical services, to assess fire appliances and equipment from the point of view of their operation, to prepare and evaluate fire protection documentation.
General competencies:
Graduates in the field of study Fire Protection Engineering and Industrial Safety are able to make independent and responsible decisions, when only partial connections are known, on the basis of general assignment, according to the general assignment and allocated resources to coordinate team activity and to bear responsibility for its results, to summarize comprehensibly the opinions of other team members. They are able to include considerations about their ethical dimension into solving the problems. Furthermore, the graduates in this field of study are able to communicate clearly and convincingly information on the nature of professional problems and their own opinions on solving them to professionals and also laymen, to use their professional knowledge, skills and competence in at least one foreign language. They are able to acquire independently other professional knowledge, skills and competence on the basis of mainly practical experience and its evaluation and also by self-studying the theoretical knowledge of the given field of study. The conception of the field of study enables thus the graduates to obtain employment in practice as well as to continue studying in a suitable follow-up Master’s degree programme.
Occupational Profiles of Graduates with Examples
The graduate in the field of study will obtain employment especially in the Fire and Rescue Service and other services of Integrated Rescue System, state administration authorities, security services of companies, will be able to function as a professionally qualified person in the field of fire protection, in fire hazard assessment and preparation of fire safety designs for structures on the levels of land-use procedure and building permission proceedings, and also implementation documentation, as a professional in test laboratories, and others. Graduates in the field of study can directly continue studying in the follow-up field of study for Master’s degree Fire Protection Engineering and Industrial Safety, or other fields of study of the follow-up Master’s degree programme Fire Protection and Industrial Safety, or follow-up Master’s degree programmes orientated towards safety at other universities.
Examination Regulations, Assessment and Grading
Examination regulations, assesment and grading are described in the Study and Examination Rules.
