Summary
In industry, transport and everyday activities, we are exposed to several chemicals that could harm human health and the environment. Information on combustion processes, explosion, toxic effects and properties of hazardous substances is given. Further, the statutory measures, in accordance with the requirements of the European Union, on classification, registration, labelling and packaging, including the requirements for the handling of hazardous chemicals, are explained. The industrial activity also generates waste to be categorized and managed in accordance with the legal requirements. Knowledge of requirements for safe transport (ADR, RID) is also included. At the present time, there is a high increase in development and use of specific materials, so-called nano-materials. The particular attention is also paid these materials, to specific dangerous properties and their regulation within the EU.
Learning Outcomes of the Course Unit
Identify the characteristic properties of dangerous (hazardous) substances. Explain the legal measures in accordance with requirements of the EU for handling with chemicals and mixtures as registration, classification, labelling and packaging, communication within downstream users including risk management measures (material safety data sheet, risk assessment). Illustrate the process of combustion, explosion and toxic effects of chemical substances and mixtures. Explain the basics of waste issues, identification of their own properties, requirements of the Czech Republic and EU legislation for waste management. Addressing the knowledge requirements of the safe transportation of hazardous substances (ADR, RID and other). Clarify the concept of nano-materials and the requirements of EU legislation for their management.
