The Czech educational system is regulated by the Higher Education Act (Act 111/1998). Studies at VŠB-TUO are regulated by the Statute of VŠB – Technical University of Ostrava.
Profile of the Programme
The technical degree programme Fire Protection and Industrial Safety is designed for the students with mainly technical ability who show interest in getting education on the Bachelor’s degree level in a broad area of safety and security. The degree programme includes four fields of study. Specialization of students in the framework of specific fields of study is possible by means of selection of compulsorily optional and optional subjects when drawing up personal study plans. The degree programme Fire Protection and Industrial Safety is typically multidisciplinary; curricula consist of subjects of theoretical, scientific and technical foundations of individual fields of study. The degree programme respects the requirements of Common Minimum Standards for the Education of Specialists in the Area of Safety and Security (adopted by a resolution of the National Security Council No. 32 of 3 July 2007). The degree programme is designed so that graduates are able to either enter practice or continue studying a related Master’s degree programme following up the Bachelor’s degree programme.

Knowledge:
Broad knowledge and comprehension of theoretical and scientific foundations of the degree programme, national security policy, safety and security policy of organization or other units, risk analysis procedures, legal modifications, modifications to regulations and standards in the area studied according to the selected field of study, psychological aspects of safety and security, software products to support risk analysis, risk prevention and communication and computer control systems. Broad knowledge of theories, concepts, methods and limitations concerning hazard identification and risk analysis, control and communication. Broad knowledge of theories, concepts, methods and limitations concerning the ensuring of safety and security in the area of the given field of study, i.e. fire safety, civil protection, civil emergency preparedness, firefighting, coping with other extraordinary events and natural disasters, major accident prevention, occupational safety and environmental safety in general, safety of technologies and technological processes, ensuring of engineering and regime safety of persons and property.
Skills:
On the basis of a generally defined task, he/she is able, by using professional knowledge, to solve practical problems of safety and security policy of a certain organizational entity, hazard identification and risk analysis, prevention and communication. Using standards of practice he/she is able to solve safety and security problems in the area corresponding to the field of study pursued, it means e.g. a fire safety design proposal for a building, proposal for preventive measures to eliminate OSH risks, proposal for area fire service deployment, determination of procedures for incident handling, prevention of major accidents, crisis and emergency plan preparation, engineering and regime safety design for a building, and others. He/she is able to search, classify and interpret information relevant to solving the identified practical problem and to use some basic research procedures in the field in the extent required for coping with practical problems in the field concerned.
General competencies:
Graduates from the degree programme are able to make independent and responsible decisions, when only partial connections are known, on the basis of general assignment, according to the general assignment and allocated resources to coordinate team activity and to bear responsibility for its results, to summarize comprehensibly the opinions of other team members. They are able to include considerations about their ethical dimension into solving the problems. Furthermore, the graduates from the degree programme are able to communicate clearly and convincingly information on the nature of professional problems and their own opinions on solving them to professionals and also laymen, to use their professional knowledge, skills and competence in at least one foreign language. They are able to acquire independently other professional knowledge, skills and competence on the basis of mainly practical experience and its evaluation and also by self-studying the theoretical knowledge of the given field of study in the framework of the degree programme.
