Finished secondary education with secondary school-leaving exam.
Regulations:
The Czech educational system is regulated by the Higher Education Act (Act 111/1998). Studies at VSB-TUO are regulated by the Statute of VSB – Technical University of Ostrava.
Profile of the Programme
The three-year study program Biomedical Assistive Technologies is a new bachelor's study program, the only one of its kind in the Czech Republic, focused on portable medical diagnostic devices and smart technologies that make life easier for healthy people, even people with disabilities. The study program combines knowledge from the field of medical instrumentation, informatics, telecommunications technology, as well as nursing and psychology. In this interdisciplinary study program, the student will gain knowledge of complex technical solutions responding to the needs of disabled people in order to increase their quality of life both in institutional care and at home. An important part are technical solutions supporting a healthy lifestyle

Knowledge:
Assistive technologies are complex technical solutions that make life easier for people with special needs, higher demands on nursing care and seniors, with the aim of achieving the utmost autonomy in their everyday lives. Another area is managed therapeutic solutions applied to the home environment, which allow to slow down the development of chronic illnesses. Intelligent systems of smart home appliances are an integral part of a comprehensive system of assistive technology. These can be both a means of increasing independence and independence, and a means of increasing the comfort of a smart home user. Moreover, smart home appliances also reduce the energy consumption of dwellings. Due to the professional breadth of the study program, students must acquire knowledge from the fields of electrical engineering and computer science. In more detail, the basic knowledge and skills related to electrotechnics, electronics and software applied in the form of biomedical sensors, medical diagnostic and therapeutic techniques, built-in sensing and automation systems, telecommunication technologies, basics of digital and biomedical signal processing, and user-computer interfaces. With regard to the field of application of technical solutions, the study includes also the fields of health and social care associated with the compulsory practice of social care providers and operators of technical solutions in the field of assistive technologies.
Skills:
Graduate of the study program will work in the field of technical administration, implementation and partly development of assistive technologies applied both in the institutional environment providing social care and social care providers directly to the client in his / her natural environment. Professional skills include: • Application of existing assistive technologies, sensors and actuators. • Managing and implementing software components to integrate specific hardware components of complex assistive technology systems. • Creation of specifications and implementation of complex solutions for assistive technologies in different application areas of these systems. • Testing, maintaining, assessing the safety, security, and reliability of applied assay technologies, both individually and in system assemblies. • Plan and implement a smart, smart home environment using the latest state-of-the-art tools • Integration and testing of systems that were previously run separately in an intelligent home environment, taking into account current standards, guidelines and legal and ethical aspects • Creation, application and management of information technology resources in the area of ​​social care in order to increase the quality of care, its systematization, organization and economic efficiency.
General competencies:
The graduate is competent - to decide independently and responsibly in new or changing contexts or in a fundamentally evolving environment - to define, coordinate and assign the final responsibility for their results according to evolving contexts and available resources - to take into account the ethical aspects resulting from technical solutions - understand and convincingly communicate to experts and the general public their own professional opinions - to use their expertise, professional skills and general competence in at least one foreign language.
Occupational Profiles of Graduates with Examples
Graduates of the study program have knowledge in the fields of assistive technologies, smart home care systems, remote controlled rehabilitation and nursing care. They know the application area, so they are able to adapt technical solutions to the requirements of consumers of these services. They are able to implement solutions in the field of electronics and information and communication technologies in direct contact with their users and thus can work in a wide range of professional disciplines. They find employment in the electronics and electronics industry, in information and communication technologies, and in health and social services. Job positions are expected • Managing and servicing applied assistive technologies in an institutional environment or in smart homes • Supervisor staff of remote (home) care providers • Application technician in assistive technology • Device developer in assistive technology • Developer of assistive technology applications • Application technology for smart home systems • System integration of smart home • Administrator of supporting IT systems for systematization of social services • Analyst of systematization of social services using information technology.

Course block: Compulsory - all courses are compulsory.
Course block: Choice-compulsory - student has to choose at least one course from the list of courses.
Course block: Optional - student can choose any course from the list of courses.
 
IMPORTANT: Student has to select so many courses to reach 30 ECTS credits per semester. Rules in detail and convenient selection of courses can be consulted with the programmme director.
Bellow stated courses are assigned for the degree studies only. Students coming to VSB-TUO for an exchange stay must select courses from the List of courses for exchange students.
