Summary
The relation between the position of the elements in the periodic table, bonding possibilities and physical and chemical properties. The properties and production of metals. Acid-base properties and the oxidation potential of the ionic melts. The thermodynamic stability of the oxidation states – Frost diagrams. Systematic inorganic chemistry of elements by particular groups. General properties, electron configuration, bonding possibilities, the most important compounds, their preparation, production and utilization.
Learning Outcomes of the Course Unit
• to apply the knowledge of general chemistry to the assessment of the properties of the elements and their compounds,
• to acquaint oneself with the production and utilization of the most important elements and their compounds,
• to use the thermodynamic expression of the oxidation states stability for the examination of the oxidation-reduction reactions course.

Acquired knowledge:
properties, production and use of the most important elements and their compounds.

Acquired skills:
basic operation in the laboratory preparation of inorganic compounds.
Course Contents
Lectures:
1. Properties of metals. Production of metals – electrolysis, reduction, replacement, thermal decomposition, leaching.
2. Hydrogen. Oxygen, acid-base properties of oxides. Water, water hardness. Air.
3. General properties of the elements of particular groups. Binding properties, occurrence, preparation, production, reactions and the most important compounds of the selected elements.
3.1 s1 elements – alkali metals.
3.2 s2 elements – magnesium, alkaline earths metals.
3.3 Aluminium, carbon.
3.4 Silica, tin, lead.
3.5 Nitrogen, phosphorus, sulphur.
3.6 Halogens, noble gases.
3.7 Properties of d and f elements, rare-earth elements.
3.8 Titanium, zirconium, vanadium, tantalum.
3.9 Chromium, molybdenum, tungsten, manganese.
3.10 Iron, cobalt, nickel, steel production.
3.11 Platinum metals, copper, silver, gold.
3.12 Zinc, cadmium, mercury.

Laboratory exercises:
• Heterogeneous mixture separation.
• Strength of acids and bases.
• Precipitation reactions.
• Acid-base character of solutions. Neutralization titration.
• Electrochemical series of metals.
• Determination of the oxygen molar mass.
• Oxidation and reduction.
• Preparation of insoluble carbonates by precipitation.
