Qualification Requirements:
Finished secondary education with secondary school-leaving exam.
The Czech educational system is regulated by the Higher Education Act (Act 111/1998). Studies at VSB-TUO are regulated by the Statute of VSB – Technical University of Ostrava.
Profile of the Programme
The primary objective of the study is to endue students with such knowledge and skills as to be able to analyze materials, their production technologies, utility properties, etc.; furthermore to carry out an advanced design of engineering materials for the given conditions of use; to design appropriate kinds of tests to evaluate the properties of materials and methods for evaluating structural characteristics, to interpret the tests competently and to be able to carry out certain kinds of tests themselves; to perform expertise in the field of materials engineering, etc.

Key Lerning Outcomes are Expressed in following Structure: Knowledge, Skills, General competencies
• The graduate has got a sufficient knowledge of internal structure of main groups of engineering materials on different scale levels; he can also describe the most important methods of the structure analysis. • The graduate demonstrates knowledge of the most important properties of engineering materials; namely mechanical properties and other physical and chemical properties; he also knows principal methods of material properties testing. • The graduate knows principles of the production technologies for the main groups of engineering materials. • The graduate is able to define characteristics of the main groups of engineering materials (metals, polymers, ceramic materials and composites) in appropriate details; he knows notably relations between material structure and its properties. The graduate can also define principal concepts how to control material properties by means of changes in the material chemical composition, changes in the production technologies and also structure modifications. • The graduate is able to describe principal degradation mechanisms of engineering materials as well as parameters that influence resistance of engineering materials to these degradation mechanisms.
The graduate is able: • To perform a basic design (selection) of engineering materials for the given conditions of their use (mechanical loading; external environment etc.). • To propose appropriate kinds of testing to evaluate mechanical or other material properties; furthermore, to propose suitable methods to evaluate material structure. The graduate is able to perform some kinds of testing by himself. • To design basic technological procedures of material manufacturing and further processing with respect to the required mechanical, or some other properties. • To perform a basic expertise in the field of materials – e.g. to evaluate probable causes of defect origin in materials, or causes of material degradation during manufacturing or in service; to determine causes of unsatisfactory mechanical (and other utility) properties etc. • To take an active part in the processes of manufacturing control and material quality management.
General competencies:
The graduate disposes of soft skills in a sufficient degree. The graduate can speak at least one foreign language at a level B1-B2 according to the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages. He/she is prepared for a team work, disposes of organization and management skills etc.
Occupational Profiles of Graduates with Examples
The graduates of the study program Materials Engineering can find job in numerous companies of machinery industry, metallurgical industry, automotive industry etc. dealing with manufacturing, further processing, testing of various kinds of engineering materials, from metals through polymers, engineering ceramics up to composite materials. They can also find job in the field of research and development of engineering materials but also elsewhere.
Examination Regulations, Assessment and Grading
Examination regulations, assesment and grading are described in the Study and Examination Rules.
Course block: Compulsory - all courses are compulsory.
Course block: Choice-compulsory - student has to choose at least one course from the list of courses.
Course block: Optional - student can choose any course from the list of courses.
IMPORTANT: Student has to select so many courses to reach 30 ECTS credits per semester. Rules in detail and convenient selection of courses can be consulted with the programmme director.
Bellow stated courses are assigned for the degree studies only. Students coming to VSB-TUO for an exchange stay must select courses from the List of courses for exchange students.
