Summary
The subject makes the students acquainted with the problems connected with historiography and ethnography appreciated as a science disciplin. It limits its position in the system of sciences and society. The contens of lectures has been built up in that way, to make the students acquainted step by step both with the general principles and concepts connected with the ethnography, and also with the particular problems – from the historical evolution of ethnical processes in various regions of our countries, their gradual forming and demonstration as far as to their significant contribution in the formation of cultural behaviour of all our society. Integral part of this subject is also student´s work using special ethnographical and historiographical literature, orientation in literary sources, ethnographical field research and study of various archival materials completed with an excursionary visit of chosen Moravian-Silesian regions, distinguished by a typical ethnographical character and habit.
Learning Outcomes of the Course Unit
The main goal of this subject is to make students acquainted with the historiography and ethnography and its position in the system of science and society. The students are led to that to acquire basic knowledge about the historical development of ethnographical processes in various regions of our country, to know to characterize (outline) these processes and compare them with one another, to define the expressive differences in the evolution of these processes in particular areas of our country. The students are led to that to know how to explain the importance of these ethnical processes by use of an analysis not only for the region where they had came into being and proceeded, but also for the other regions in our country. The students have to be able to point out these processes, customs and traditions, which are so meaningful, that run over the frontiers of region where they had originated and, nowadays, they form and affect life of our all society. The students will also learn to investigate these processes within the frame of tutorials and field research using various kinds of special literature and archival materials.
Course Contents
1. Definition of the subject of ethnographic research.
2. Differences in the meaning and historical sequence of the use of the names ethnography, ethnology, cultural and social anthropology in the Czech Republic and abroad.
3. The structure of ethnography and its specific methodology.
4. Introduction to historiography, its relation to history and regional historiography.
5. The most frequent concepts in the ethnography of the human nation, ethnic group, race from the point of view of various world schools and directions applied in the field, for example migration, comparatist, functionalist.
6. Historiography of the Middle Ages up to the beginnings of scientific historiography in the Enlightenment period.
7. General ethnography focusing on the racial, linguistic and religious differentiation of humanity.
8. Ethnographic regions in northern Bohemia, their folk culture, history, important heritage-protected buildings and interesting natural locations. The special position of the capital city of Prague.
9. The spiritual culture of the people, popular religious ideas, religion, magic and cult, taking into account their existence in the life of today's man.
10. Material culture of the people, employment, craft and agriculture.
11. Folklore and folkloristics, dance, singing, music, folk literature and folk theater.
12. Ethnographic regions in northern Moravia, their folk culture, history and historiography, important heritage-protected objects and interesting natural locations.
13. Orientation in literature with ethnographic and historiographic issues, from the bibliographic catalog of the Czech Republic to regional productions of local history.
