Summary |
---|
The course clarifies the role of microorganisms in the live natural system and their roles in the different methods of processing waste from mining and other industries.
Students gain information on the morphology and physiology of acellular organisms and basic groups of microorganisms, their status in the nature as well as on the mutual relations of microbial populations, including an overview of basic pathogenic and non-pathogenic microorganism strains.
Some lectures will be dedicated to significant microorganism strains and their practical uses in modern biotechnologies related to waste management and their roles in forming and protecting the environment. |
Learning Outcomes of the Course Unit |

Target competences lie in gaining new knowledge and its application in problem solving, observation, experiments and communication:
- to characterize the attributes of prions, viruses and bacteria, to understand phylogenetic relations of the different groups, to learn about and to term characteristic organisms of the individual taxons and to understand the significance of pathogenic as well as non-pathogenic species
- to apply the gained knowledge in dealing with practical tasks in seminars, to consider the consequences of a phenomenon from the environmental, sanitary as well as economic points of view; to build a positive attitude to nature
- to be able to work independently on the set tasks, to observe and objectively record the experiment results, to adhere to safe (aseptic) work principles when working with biological material and technical equipment
- to be able to work with expert/academic texts, to be familiar with the expert terminology, to be able to synthetize the obtained experimental data and to justify own approach in dealing with a biological problem |

2. Chemical structure of a microbial cell and general structure of a microbial cell, differences in the structure of prokaryotic and eukaryotic microorganisms
3. The physiology of microorganisms – the basics
4. The metabolism of microorganisms, the methods of energy use by microorganisms
5. Genetics of microorganisms, interactions of microorganisms and the environment
6. Acellular forms – viroids and prions, the pathogenicity of prions, EU preventive measures
7. Acellular organisms - viruses
8. Cellular microorganisms - archea
9. Cellular microorganisms - bacteria
10. Cellular microorganisms - microscopic filamentous fungi
11. Cellular microorganisms - cyanobacteria and algae
12. Microorganisms in mining technology for sustainable mine production
13. Microorganisms in waste management important from the sanitary point of view, applications of microorganisms in modern industrial biotechnologies, the role of microorganisms in the revitalization of environment after extraction and processing of mineral resources |
