Summary
The subject acquaints with the evaluation of waste properties with regard to further handling of them, hazardous properties of wastes and their evaluation, conditions for the work of the authorized person and links to other legislation. Students will acquire legislative, administrative and physical procedures for evaluation of waste properties, sampling and evaluation methods. They can categorize waste according to a catalog, plan a sampling, enter and evaluate sample analysis and assess their properties.
Learning Outcomes of the Course Unit
Obtaining basic theoretical and practical knowledge about the waste characterization process. Orientation in the issue of sampling, evaluation and categorization of wastes. Orientation in related legislation.
Course Contents
1. Legislative background for evaluation of waste properties - what regulations define
2. Waste categorization, hazardous waste, definitions
3. Authorization to evaluate dangerous properties - conditions, powers, validity, entitlements to authorized persons. Waste hazard exclusion certificate - requirements, validity, hazardous properties notice
4. Packaging and labeling of hazardous wastes, relation to other regulations
5. Sampling of waste (types, methods, applicable regulations), labeling, packaging, preservation, transport of sample, pre-treatment
6. Choice of procedures for the evaluation of properties and selection of properties to be assessed, depending on the intended use or disposal, waste management hierarchy, justification for waste characteristics and economy
7. Waste storage requirements depending on their properties in temporary storage
8. Waste analytics (laboratories, prices, choice of procedure, how to enter an analysis), laboratory accreditation procedure, instrument continuity, uncertainty in results
9. Definition of hazardous properties of waste and criteria for their evaluation
10. Evaluation of hazardous properties of HP4 - HP8, HP10, HP11, relation to other legislation
11. Evaluation of hazardous properties of HP1 - HP3
12. Evaluation of hazardous properties of HP9, HP12, HP13
13. Evaluation of hazardous properties of HP14 and HP15
