Course Contents
1. Purpose of mineral treatment; Gravitational separation technology - the essence of the process, the possibilities of use
2. Magnetic and electrical separation - principles and equipment, special methods of separation
3. Physico-chemical methods of separation - technological characteristics
4. The essence of flotation, its historical development and significance. Terminology and classification of flotation in physico-chemical and electrochemical processes of substance separation.
5. Construction and composition of phases in the flotation process (solid, liquid and gaseous), properties of the solid phase. Flotability as a property of the solid phase, methodology of its determination.
6. Surface phenomena at phase contacts, study of phase interfaces: liquid-gas, solid-gas, solid-liquid. Elementary flotation act-thermodynamic characteristics of the flotation process.
7. Physical bases of flotation. Equilibrium of physical forces on three-phase contact. Particle size and gas bubbles under flotation conditions.
8. Chemical basis of flotation. Flotation reagents, their classification and role in the process. Adsorption at phase interfaces.
9. Flotation collectors, their chemical nature and mechanisms of their action in hydrophobization of the solid phase.
10. Flotation foams, their classification, chemical characteristics and sorption methods. Functions of foamers at the liquid-gas phase interface. Formation and properties of two- and three-phase flotation foams. Measurement of foaming. Control flotation reagents, their distribution according to the role and effect in flotation. Mechanisms of action of flotation activating, suppressing and modifying agents.
11. Mechanical and technical equipment of flotation. Classification of flotation machines according to functional parameters. Flotators, mechanical, pneumatic, combined, special and developmental. Flotation equipment for wastewater treatment. Auxiliary technical equipment for flotation.
12. Technology of flotation process. Test methodology for evaluating the flotability of substances, flotability curves and their evaluation.
13. Complementary processes - division and characteristics. Thickening and dewatering of fine-grained products. Drainage equipment (tanks, sorters, centrifuges). Principle of vacuum, hyperbaric and pressure filtration.
