Summary
Learning Outcomes of the Course Unit
- Acquirement of the basic terms in the field of the atomic structure and chemical bonding
- Knowledge of the relationship between the properties of elements and periodicity of the electron shell build-up
- Knowledge of the patterns of the chemical reactions course
- Arrangement and enumeration of chemical equations, performing stoichiometric calculations
- Knowledge of the properties and application of the most important elements and their compounds
- Basic operations in the laboratory, preparation of inorganic compounds
Course Contents
1. Chemical nomenclature. Basic terms. Calculation of the mixture composition. Atom structure.
2. Stoichiometric calculations. Mass balance of the simple system. Electron configuration. Chemical bonding.
3. Periodic table patterns. States of matter. Phase diagram of one-component system. Ideal gas laws.
4. Chemical reactions. Chemical kinetics.
5. Energetic changes at chemical reactions. Chemical equilibrium.
6. Acid-base reactions in solutions and melts. Oxidation-reduction reactions.
7. Electrochemical series of potentials. Galvanic cells. Electrolysis.
8. Properties and production of metals. Corrosion. Hydrogen and oxygen depolarisation
9. Hydrogen, oxygen, water.
10. s1 and s2 elements – general properties. Sodium, potassium, magnesium, calcium.
11. p1, p2, p3 elements - general properties. Aluminium, carbon, silica, tin, lead, nitrogen, phosphorus.
12. p4, p5, p6 elements - general properties. Sulphur, fluorine, chlorine.
13. d elements. Transition metals complexes, structure, bonding, spectroscopic and magnetic properties. Coordination equilibria and reaction mechanisms.
14. Titanium, zirconium, chromium, molybdenum, tungsten, manganese, iron, zinc, mercury, copper, silver, gold.
