Prof. Ing. Vaclav Roubicek, CSc., dr.h.c. died on Wednesday, July 14, 2010, after a long serious illness. His name was closely connected with the VSB-Technical University of Ostrava and the Moravian-Silesian region.
Prof. Ing. Vaclav Roubicek, CSc., dr.h.c., was born in 1944 in Mlada Boleslav, Czech Republic. After completing a nine-year elementary school in Jicin - a town where he used to live since his birth, he started attending a general high school also in Jicin.
In 1968 Vaclav Roubicek started working at VSB-Technical University of Ostrava as a scientific worker. In 1976 he defended his Ph.D. degree at the same university, Faculty of Metallurgy and Material Engineering, focused on chemistry and utilisation of fuels.
After the „Velvet revolution" in 1989, he entered the university academic staff. He became an Assistant Professor and later he received the degree of Associate Professor. In 1992 he obtained the professorship for fuel technologies. In 1990 he served as an Associate Dean of the Faculty of Metallurgy and Material Engineering and since 1991 he was the Vice-Rector for Science and International Affairs. In 1997 he was elected the Rector of the VSB-TUO. Under his management, the university made an important progress in its restructuring from a mining college to technical university. In November 2002, professor Roubicek was elected to the Senate of the Czech Republic for the period 2002-2008. He was appointed a Vice-Chairman of the committee for education, science, culture and human rights.
During his academic acting, he published more than 200 books, papers in renowned magazines both in Czech Republic and abroad and presented at many Czech and international conferences. He was also a co-ordinator of many important projects.
Thanks to his achievements in both the managing positions and research activities he was addressed by many institutions to become a member or even chairman of their boards. For all, since 1999 he was a chairman of iNEER - International Network in Engineering Education and Research; since 2000 he was a member of International Steering Committee of the Pittsburgh Coal Conference etc.
In 2006 he was taken ill with a serious illness and he succumbed to it on Wednesday, July 14, 2010.
He will stay in our mind as an excellent pedagogue and expert with international respect and especially as a very kind and helpful man with creative approach to professional work and very optimistic attitude to life. His direct character and cheerful spirit was loved by all his colleagues and friends. A very precious man and good friend will be missed.
