VSB-TUO and T-Mobile are concluding a memorandum on long-term cooperation
On Friday 20 December, VSB - Technical University of Ostrava and the company T-Mobile Czech Republic a.s. are signing a memorandum of long-term cooperation. This concerns the construction of the first campus network in the Czech Republic.

The network will cover part of the university campus and will be part of the so-called testbed, which focuses on digitized production and demonstration of Industry 4.0 principles, and will test the use of the campus network. “The main focus of our cooperation is the mutual exchange of information, analysis of the behaviour of the campus network, the implementation of scientific research and commercial pilot projects,” explains the company T-Mobile.

VSB - Technical University of Ostrava is gradually becoming the largest living laboratory in the Czech Republic. “We want to simulate an entire city, smart city, on our campus. Almost continuously, there are between 10,000 and 15,000 people, so it is a prime opportunity to test the functioning of the digital society. The 5G network will be the backbone of this digitization, without which it would be almost unthinkable to want to build something like this. Another important element is the computing power required to simulate and optimize the individual steps of digitization, ” explains Václav Snášel, the Rector of the university. Computing power will be provided by the IT4Innovations National Supercomputing Center. After the launch of the 5G network, the network will continue to expand into the campus. The partners assume that they will already be able to conclude cooperation with specific contracting entities from among companies and test real scenarios next year. One of them is Ericsson, a provider of technology for the testbed project.

The testbed will soon be completed, and the network is scheduled to be put into operation in the second quarter of 2020.
