VŠB-TUO activities in the framework of assistance to persons affected by the conflict in Ukraine

As of 7.3.2022.

1. Assistance to students and employees of the University

The University immediately earmarked funds to support students affected by the conflict. In March 2022, Ukrainian students will be paid a one-time scholarship in the amount of CZK 10,000. It is a newly announced scholarship of VŠB-TUO, which students must apply for, will not be paid across the board. It is intended to solve their financial problems caused by the state of war, e.g. inability to use accounts of blocked banks, loss of financial support from family or other source of income, sending funds to family, etc. From April 2022, it is planned that the scholarship will be extended to other students from Russian-speaking countries who are affected by the conflict. The administration of scholarships takes place through the Study Department of the faculties and ICP. MŠMT has now announced support only for new students from Ukraine.

Students and employees have been offered the services of the University's International Contact Point (ICP), which is able to help them, e.g. with providing a psychologist or a coach. ICP can be contacted during office hours in person, by phone or at any time by e-mail. ICP has the function of the university's Welcome Centre and has been ready to provide these services for a long time.

The VŠB-TUO Career Centre has offered students temporary jobs from its portal. It has also approached its partner companies so that students can be provided with additional opportunities for temporary jobs so that they can have new opportunities for earning money.

2. Financial and material assistance to persons affected by the conflict

Immediately after the outbreak of the conflict, the university published information on possibilities for financial and material assistance through verified institutions. Because the assistance is supposed to be quick and effective, we do not organize our own collections, but we have joined the material collection of the City of Ostrava, which approached us.

As part of the cooperation with the participating organizations, refugees are being accommodated in a part of our dormitories, which is now defined for this purpose. It is now (7. 3. 2022) about 60 people, mostly women and children of different ages. The number of places demanded and occupied, however, is constantly changing. However, the capacity of these places is now limited, because our dormitories are used by students, the summer semester normally runs.

The university has offered other activities within its means (e.g. transport of microbuses to the authorities, sports activities in the gym on the dormitories via ITVS, participation in the circles). At the moment, however, refugees in the dormitories are overwhelmed by offers of help and activities, they are cared for by the Organization for the Support of Refugees, the Statutory City of Ostrava, ÚMO Poruba and volunteers from among our students, who we are very proud to have actively involved themselves in this way.

3. Communication

A contact e-mail for questions () has been set up for the needs of coordination of the help offered and requested, as well as a website where all information on this topic is regularly updated in Czech and English.

The rector of the university clearly expressed himself in a mass e-mail to condemn the conflict, at the same time he also called on everyone to behave towards Russian students. This was further preventively supported by increased security at the dormitories.
