Summary
The subject should complete basic knowledge of the student in field of
environmental policy.The first part is dealing with environmental policy in
general. The second part is focused on the process of development of
international policy as a framework of an environmental policy of EU. The
third part of the subject is devoted to the formation and operation of the
environmental policy of EU. Student will acquire knowledge of the tools of EU
environmental policy and problems connected with their implementation at all
levels – international, the member states of EU and other countries.
Learning Outcomes of the Course Unit
After completing the course students should be able to:
- define the subject, aims, and principles of the environmental policy,
- choose the appropriate type of environmental indicator for integration of
environmental aspects into different sectoral policies,
- interpret the main results of development of the international environmental policy,
- demonstrate a short history of the Environmental Action Programmes of EU,
- conclude the priority areas, objectives a strategic approaches of the Sixth
environment action programme EC “Environment 2010: Our future, Our choice”.

4. Historical review - development of an international environmental policy
5. Development of international environmental policy towards
sustainability
6. Beginning of environmental policy formation in EC
7. Development of the EC environmental policy untill 1990
8. EC policy towards sustainability – the first wave of environmental
policy integration process
9. Deepening of the integration process and legislative framework of
the sustainability policy
10. Third wave of the environmental policy integration of environmental
consideration into other policy areas
11. New wave of the integration process - from Cardiff to Helsinki and
beyond
12. The Sixth Environment Action Programme of the European
Community “Environment 2010: Our future, Our choice”
13. Cardiff integration process and completing of the Lisbon
Strategy /2000-2005/
14. Deepening of the political process - Review of the EU Sustainable
Development Strategy
