Scientists at the Faculty of Civil Engineering are “cooking” flexible concrete

Concrete as one of the most universal construction materials.

Concrete is one of the most universal construction materials. It composes of cement, gross and tiny pottery, water and admixtures. When it is solid, it makes an artificial solid tangle. Concrete and cement are basic building materials and their advantages are durability, solidity and resistance. Moreover, it is also recyclable. Most of the time concrete changes its form and characteristics. Some of the new additions are fibre-cement composites which make concrete flexible.

Everything is still in the verifying phase, but at the Faculty of Civil Engineering they have interesting results. “Concrete is not falling apart with the first fracture, conversely it is more solid, says Ing. Marek Jašek Ph.D., from the Faculty of Civil Engineering VŠB-TUO. Moreover, it is also formable and thin layers are possible to bend. The biggest advantage is paradoxically resistance against bending. This type of concrete could be used in earthquake areas, the scientist added. Flexible concrete is also applicable in the process of building or reconstructing of tracks or in production of concrete parts.

There are many kinds of concrete. We could divide it into categories as solidity, volume weight, reinforcement or the way of manufacturing. In the evolutional workroom at The Faculty of Civil Engineering it often looks like in a kitchen. The substance is mixed with a big stirring spoon and other materials such as crushed plastic bottles or other waste materials, which found a new way of utility.
