VSB-TUO has launched a unique system of courses and services for PhD students
VSB - Technical University of Ostrava has launched the PhD Academy for students of doctoral programmes. This unique system of courses and support services is designed to help PhD students develop the skills necessary for the successful completion of their studies and the start of their scientific career. In addition to lectures and workshops, the University also plans to organise Info Days and student competitions.

The main goal of the PhD Academy is to create a motivating environment for PhD students, and to support their development in areas related primarily to scientific and publishing activities, whether it is the research itself or presenting results in the form of publications in journals or at conferences. We will also give PhD students a helping hand in the preparation of project proposals or in their mobility abroad. We also want to strengthen interdisciplinary cooperation between PhD students at the University and support their involvement in the life of the academic community and research teams,” said Jana Kukutschová, one of the initiators of the PhD Academy and Vice-Rector for Science and Research.

This academic year will see the pilot run of the PhD Academy, which offers a wide and varied range of courses from multiple providers at a university-wide level. It mainly covers the areas of scientometrics and publishing practice, the basics of scientific work, project management and soft skills. For example, students will practice writing a scientific paper, prepare for presenting at conferences, process data and expand their English language skills. For the summer semester, it is planned to gradually expand the courses on offer to include the tailor-made courses or specialised lectures from the individual faculties according to their field of study.

We dare say that this is a unique concept and a comprehensive system of education for doctoral students. We have not encountered this form of the PhD Academy, as it is conceived at VSB-TUO, at any other domestic university,” added the Vice-Rector.

The courses will be led by lecturers from VSB-TUO, experts from selected scientific departments in the country, and also international lecturers. Courses are voluntary and can be selected to fit with the area of expertise and the schedule of the PhD students. The University will regularly monitor the results of the courses and the interest of students, instructors and study programme guarantors, and will further expand the courses on offer based on the evaluation. Some of the courses have already started, whilst others are still open for registration.  There are more than 1100 doctoral students at VSB-TUO.
