The FIP Academy seminars started with the first two presentations
On 3 February, the lectures led by Ladislav Foltyn from IT4Innovations at VSB-Technical University of Ostrava and Vladislav Kolarik from the Fraunhofer Institute for Chemical Technology ICT kicked off a series of seminars on professional topics, organised by the newly established FIP Academy.

While the first speaker introduced the participants of the online meeting to the genetic algorithm and its possible use in practice, the main topic of the second presentation was slurry formulation for industrial large-scale aluminium diffusion coatings.

Ladislav Foltyn first introduced the participants to the theory of the Genetic Algorithm, one of the so-called evolutionary algorithms that are inspired by natural selection processes. “The aim of the presentation was to explain which operations should be used and what they look like. This was then practically demonstrated on the optimisation problem of an energy distribution network in terms of short-circuit currents using Python's Pandapower package,” said Ladislav Foltyn, who also outlined other possible applications of the genetic algorithm in various industries during his presentation. He concluded his presentation with a short demonstration of the optimisation software developed at IT4Innovations.

Vladislav Kolarik reported on slurries for industrial large-scale aluminium diffusion coatings, which were prepared by him and his colleagues from the Fraunhofer Institute for Chemical Technology ICT. Diffusion aluminide coatings, deposited as Al slurries, are an efficient and economic technique to protect ferritic steels against oxidation and corrosion at high temperatures. In the international business the transport of liquid Al slurry paint to the application site is often preferred to the transport of high purity Al micro-powders due to legal regulations in some countries. The Al slurry paint for the application of aluminium particles to the steel surface has to possess appropriate viscosity, it has to be suitable for storage, transportable and not hazardous to health and environment. These factors can be influenced by their composition.

We prepared three slurry formulations with spherical high purity aluminium particles with an average diameter of 15 micrometres. For two of them we used isopropanol and butanol as dissolvent and polyvinylbutryal 30 as a binder. The third suspension was made using acetone and butanol as dissolvent and the commercial Paraloid B72 as a binder,” Kolarik explained.

The FIP Academy is an intellectual platform that aims to connect the scientific and research staff of all the partner institutions involved, the Fraunhofer Institute for Chemical Technology ICT, the Fraunhofer Institute for Machine Tools and Forming Technology IWU and VSB - Technical University Ostrava, in the form of regular online seminars on professional topics. Researchers thus have the opportunity to present their activities and research results, as well as to learn about the projects and scientific findings of their colleagues and thus gain an awareness of current and possible future joint topics.

Further seminars are scheduled for 3rd March, 7th April, 5th May and 2nd June, each at 2:00 p.m. via MS Teams.
