Subject syllabus

1. Introduction. Regions and their classification. Theory of region. Classification of regions in the European Union. Euroregions.
2. Regional disparities. Indicators of regional differences. Structural indicators. Regional disparities in the European Union.
3. Theory of regional development and regional policy. Regional development and factors in regional development. Theories of regional development. The types and instruments of regional policy.
4. Regional Development and Policy in Europe. Regional policy in selected European countries. Key milestones in the development of EU Regional policy.
5. Institutional framework of the EU Regional policy. Regional policy and coordination of EU structural instruments. Management of regional policy at EU level.
6. Instruments of the EU Regional policy. Regional policy in the European Union. Financial instruments of EU regional policy.
7. EU Regional policy in the programming period 2007-2013. The reform of the EU Cohesion policy. Cohesion policy objectives and initiatives for the period 2007-2013. The focus of assistance from the Structural Funds.
8. Pre-accession instruments in the EU Regional policy. Programmes Phare, ISPA, SAPARD and IPA.
9. Regional policy in the Czech Republic. The legislative framework for Czech regional policy. Support for regional development in the country. Coordination of economic and social cohesion.
