Main topics

Field Practice III focuses on integrating the in-depth specialist knowledge and skills acquired during the follow-on Master’s programme when tackling complex tasks in a real-world surveying environment. Specific professional activities depend on the specialisation of the workplace and must correspond to the Engineering Geodesy degree programme and the stated graduate profile.

The main topics include, in particular:

• organisation of a specialist department, quality management system, professional responsibility and the role of a chartered surveyor;
• analysis of the terms of reference for a complex surveying project, identification of legal, technical and professional requirements, and planning of the approach to the project;
• proposal and comparison of alternative solutions, and a professionally justified selection of surveying methods, technologies, instruments and software;
• carrying out fieldwork and related office-based surveying activities in accordance with the specialist focus of the organisation;
• collection, integration, processing, analysis and interpretation of spatial data;
• assessment of the accuracy, reliability and quality of results, identification of sources of error and uncertainty, and proposal of control or corrective measures;
• applying legislation, technical standards, methodologies, technological procedures and internal regulations when carrying out professional tasks;
• preparing and checking professional, technical and, where applicable, officially usable documentation;
• utilising current geodetic, geoinformation and data technologies in professional practice;
• professional communication, technical reasoning, teamwork and the coordination of individual work activities;
• legal, ethical and safety aspects of professional practice and adherence to the scope of professional competence and authorisation;
• critical evaluation of the professional task at hand and reflection on one’s own professional experience.
