Syllabus of lectures:
1. What is life? Common features of living creatures, order and disorder,
properties that maintain a population, evolution by natural selection, the scientific method.
2. Atoms, molecules and life. Atoms, particles, molecules, chemical properties
water, carbon-containing compounds
3. Basic unit of life. The discovery of cells and the basic theory of cell
Two main types of cells, common features and structure of all cells, specialized
function and structure in cells.
4. Cells. Dynamics and basic energetic flow of the universe, the chemical
reaction agents and energy flow in cells, metabolism, cellular transport.
5. Life needs adequate energy. ATP, glycolysis, fermentation, aerobic respiration,
control of metabolism.
6. The absorption of sunlight and nutrients construction. Photosynthesis, color
pigments, special types of fixation of carbon dioxide.
7. Cellular and life cycles. Chromosomes, mitosis, meiosis, reproduction,
evolution.
8. DNA - thread of life. Genes, DNA types, hopes and problems in research
recombinant DNA.
9. The origin of life and its diversity.
10. Unicellular organisms (bacteria and cyanobacteria), Producers and decomposer
(algae, plants, fungi).
11. Animals (invertebrates, vertebrates).
12. The genetic basis for evolution. Genetic variations, factors of evolution, what
is a kind of modern synthesis and the main trends in evolution.
13. The population model in space and time. The level of interaction, model extension,
limit population growth.
14. Biosphere. Life on land, water, changes in the biosphere.
Exercise:
The aim of exercise is to deepen knowledge of the lectures. The basic form
exercise is a seminar and laboratory work.
