Lectures:
1. Properties of metals. Production of metals – electrolysis, reduction, replacement, thermal decomposition, leaching.
2. Hydrogen. Oxygen, acid-base properties of oxides. Water, water hardness. Air.
3. General properties of the elements of particular groups. Binding properties, occurrence, preparation, production, reactions and the most important compounds of the selected elements.
3.1 s1 elements – alkali metals.
3.2 s2 elements – magnesium, alkaline earths metals.
3.3 Aluminium, carbon.
3.4 Silica, tin, lead.
3.5 Nitrogen, phosphorus, sulphur.
3.6 Halogens, noble gases.
3.7 Properties of d and f elements, rare-earth elements.
3.8 Titanium, zirconium, vanadium, tantalum.
3.9 Chromium, molybdenum, tungsten, manganese.
3.10 Iron, cobalt, nickel, steel production.
3.11 Platinum metals, copper, silver, gold.
3.12 Zinc, cadmium, mercury.

Laboratory exercises:
• Heterogeneous mixture separation.
• Strength of acids and bases.
• Precipitation reactions.
• Acid-base character of solutions. Neutralization titration.
• Electrochemical series of metals.
• Determination of the oxygen molar mass.
• Oxidation and reduction.
• Preparation of insoluble carbonates by precipitation.
