Subject syllabus

Lectures
1. Causes of development of secondary metallurgy methods.
2. Principal procedures of processing of steel by secondary metallurgy and its effects.
3. Elements related to production and refining of steel.
4. Gases in steel – thermodynamics, mechanism and kinetics of dissolution of H2 and N2.
5. Thermodynamics and mechanism of steel degassing.
6. Dissolving of oxygen in steel – thermodynamics and mechanism.
7. Conditions for flotation of inclusions by an inert gas – absorption of inclusions by slag.
8. Refining of steel by inert gases – effects – methods of execution.
9. Vacuum refining of steel – nucleation of gaseous bubbles – diffusion of gas atoms toward surface.
10. Technologies of secondary metallurgy vacuum treatment of steel, including appropriate equipment.
11. Conditions for production of stainless steels – thermodynamics of deep decarburisation of steel with high content of chromium – technology for production of stainless steels.
12. Refining of steel by synthetic slags – thermodynamic conditions for refining – mechanism and kinetics of refining – technologies for refining of steel by liquid and solid synthetic slag – used slags – characteristics.
13. Ladles furnaces – their importance of treatment of steel by secondary metallurgy – classification of ladle furnaces – possibilities of ladle furnaces.
14. Injection of cored wires and aluminium wires into steel – reasons, technologies.

Exercises
1. Calculation of steel alloying. Technical library - selection and processing of topical literary sources from the area of secondary metallurgy.
2. Elements at production and refining of steel (oxidation of carbon, manganese, silicon, dephosphorisation, desulphurisation); specification of program.
3. Hydrogen, nitrogen and oxygen in molten steel.
4. Removal of hydrogen and nitrogen by argon in vacuum, floating of inclusions.
5. Tour at TŘINECKÉ ŽELEZÁRNY, a.s. (ladle metallurgy).
6. Conditions for nucleation of gaseous bubbles in vacuum, kinetics of degassing in ladle and in steel flow; written exam.
7. Possibilities of reduction of content of gases in vacuum, degassing of steel in its flow, kinetics of degassing by chamber method.
8. Deoxidation of steel by carbon in vacuum.
9. Desulphurisation of steel by liquid synthetic slag, balance of mass at desulphurisation.
10. Monitoring of development of heat in selected metallurgical company.
11. Refining of steel by blowing of fine-grained admixtures.
12. Comparison of individual secondary metallurgy units; written exam. Video-programs (DH, SL Vítkovice, CCM at ArcelorMittal, ESR of steels).
13. Seminar - presentation of results of study of literature.
14. Credit.
