Subject syllabus

Classification of heterogeneous catalytic reactions. The mechanism of action of the catalysts, types of catalysts, adsorption, chemisorption. Factors affecting the catalytic reactions, nature of the catalytic complexes. catalysis on metals and non-metals, acid-base catalysis. Kinetics of heterogeneous catalytic reactions, rate of catalytic reactions, rate equations used in heterogeneous catalysis, Langmuir-Hinshelwood mechanism, the Mars-van Krevelen mechanism. Transport phenomena in heterogeneous catalysis, the influence of external and internal diffusion process on the catalytic reaction, diffusion in porous media, the effective diffusion coefficient, effective thermal conductivity, coefficient of external heat and mass transfer. Experimental laboratory reactors, procedure in search of a new catalyst, design of kinetic experiments, processing of experimental kinetic data. Properties of technical catalysts, catalyst poisons, deactivation, promoters, activity, selectivity.
