Subject syllabus

1. Introduction
2. Definition of alternative energy sources. Renewable and non-renewable energy sources, energy consumption, energy mix.
3. Solar energy. Solar spectrum, solar positioning, solar energy density, direct radiation, diffuse radiation.
4. Thermal collectors. Flat plate thermal collectors, vacuum thermal collectors, concentrating thermal collectors.
5. Photovoltaic cells (PV). Principle of photovoltaic conversion, types of PV cells, factors affecting PV cell efficiency.
6. Wind energy. Kinetic energy of wind, wind power, wind power plant design.
7. Energy of water streams. Water motor power, types of water turbines.
8. Marine energy. Sea waves, tides, sea currents, temperature gradient between different depths.
9. Biomass energy. Combustion, gasification, pyrolysis, anaerobic digestion and ethanol fermentation.
10. Geothermal energy. Geothermal gradient, geothermal resources, geothermal power plants.
11. Heat pumps. Heat pump (HP) principle, heating factor, working substances, types of HP.
12. Hydrogen technology. Water electrolysis, fuel cells.
13. Energy storage. Mechanical storage, thermal storage, chemical storage, types of batteries.
