Subject syllabus

Lectures:
- Principles of thermodynamics of solids; systems, components, phases; Gibbs phase rule.
- Structure of solids; crystal structures; defects in crystalline solids; solid solutions;, principles of diffusion.
- Mechanical properties of materials; tensile testing; notch toughness testing; hardness testing; examples of technological testing.
- One-component systems; solidification; solid state transformations.
- Two- component (binary) systems – classification, practical importance.
- Binary systems and their equilibrium phase diagrams; system with unlimited solubility in both liquid and solid state; system with eutectic reaction; system with peritectic reaction; eutectoid reaction; peritectoid reaction.
- More complex binary systems; intermediate phases.
- Iron – carbon system; metastable and stable binary diagram; principal kinds of reactions.
- Fe-C alloys: steels, cast irons; classification, chemical composition.
- Austenite phase transformations upon cooling; diffusion vs diffusionless transformations; martensite, bainite.
