Subject syllabus

Lectures:

- The basic terms and definitions, corrosion types, illustrations. The significance of corrosion study from the point of economical losses and costs of corrosion protection.
- Electrochemical corrosion - electrode potentials, standard potentials of metals, active, passive and immune state, diagrams E-pH (Pourbaixe), galvanic and corrosion cells
- Anodic and cathodic processes, partial and summary (total) electrochemical reactions couplet reactions; exchange currents and equilibrium potential, corrosion current and potential, Faradays´ laws, corrosion rates.
- Atmospheric corrosion of metals, influence of humidity and impurities, degrees of corrosion (corrosivity). Testing methods.
- Corrosion in waters, gaseous corrosion, influence of environment composition, microbial corrosion, stray-current corrosion.
- Localized and selective types of corrosion: pitting, crevice and intergranular corrosion.
- Influence of mechanical stresses, stress corrosion cracking, corrosion fatigue, fretting, tribo-corrosion.
- Potentiostatic and potentiodynamic polarization methods of corrosion testing.
- Chemical corrosion – thermodynamics, reactions, and kinetics of corrosion processes. The basic types of corrosion in oxidizing and reducing gases. Heat resistant steels and alloys.
- Corrosion protection: design of material, treatment of environment, inhibitors, cathodic protection, structural solutions.
- Surface treatment – chemical and galvanic coatings, passive and conversion layers, paints, polymers and rubbers; temporary protection, enamels and ceramic coatings.

Exercises:

- Introduction to subject, program, literature, reports, safety at work,
- electrode potentials, evaluation of water environments according to pH, diagrams E-pH (Pourbaixe), calculations,
- Electrochemical corrosion – application of Faradays´ laws, basic calculations.
- Determination of corrosion rate (Zn) from released hydrogen at corrosion.
- Metallic protective coatings, their testing and properties, nickel plating.
- Atmospheric corrosion tests – accelerated laboratory tests in cabinets.
- Influence of environment on corrosion resistance of material, assessment of corrosion effectiveness of inhibitors.
- Testing of intergranular, pitting and crevice corrosion, stress corrosion cracking
- Films and videos on metallic materials corrosion.
- Presentation of reports, using the information of metal corrosion.
- Credit for education, point classification.
