Subject syllabus

Lectures:
- An overview of technical materials, their aplicability on diferent sectors.
- Evaluation of operational safety and reliability.
- Evaluation of the materials resistance to brittle fracture.
- Structural steel for normal temperature use, steel for welded structures.
- The fundaments of heat and corrosion resistance of structural materials.
- Corrosion and heat resistant materials.
· Creep of structural materials. Heat resisting materials.
· Tool materials. Tool steels, cemented carbides, ceramic materials.
· Technical significant non-ferrous metals.
· Copper and its alloys.
· Aluminium and its alloys.
· Nickel alloys, titanium alloys.
· Technical Ceramics - types, properties.
· Polymers - types, properties.
· Composite Materials.
· Coatings.

Exercise:

· Introduction, binary diagrams, effect of alloying elements on the character of the Fe-C diagram.
· Fracture toughness, determination of transit temperatures.
- Influence of the purity of the steel and heat treatment on brittle-fracture characteristics.
· Evaluation of intergranular corrosion of austenitic stainless steels.
· Mechanisms of reinforcement heat resistant steels.
· Structural analysis of alloys on non-ferrous metals.
- Evaluation of properties of cutting ceramics.
· Summary of exercises, credit count.
