- Survey of engineering materials; their applicability in various industrial branches.
- Resistance of materials to brittle failure; principal mechanisms of materials strengthening.
- Structural steels for use at normal and lower temperatures; steels for welded structures.
- Steels for quenching and tempering; corrosion resistant steels; creep resistant steels.
- Tool materials; tool steels; sintered carbides; ceramic tools.
- Important non-ferrous metals. Aluminium and its alloys; copper and its alloys; nickel and its alloys; titanium and its alloys.
- Ceramic materials – classifications, structure, properties.
- Polymers – principal categories; structure, properties.
- Composite materials – principal kinds, properties.
- Surface layers.
