Subject syllabus

1. So called long 19th century. Looking for the style in architecture – historicism and its variants. New materials and building types including the architecture in the USA.
2. Neo-classicism vs. Romanticism period in European painting.
3. Neo-classicism vs. Romanticism period in European sculpture.
4. The problems of Realism – its roots and manifestation in European visual culture.
5. The overview of the Czech painting from the break of the 18th and 19th century to the so called Generation of the National Theatre. Problems of monumental sculpture.
6. Changes in visuality – impressionism and post-impressionism; variants of them in Czech space.
7. Art Nouveau symbolism and its manifestation in architecture and arts in the break of the 19th and the 20th century.
8. Modernity and its manifestation in architecture, sculpture and painting. Fauvism, expressionism, cubism, futurism and Czech art to 1918 in European context.
9. Avant-garde; plurality and interference –isms; theoretic impulses for them and their formal strangeness. Classical manifestations, vitalism, new objectivity, dada, poeticism, surrealism, constructivism. Functionalism in architecture.
10. Czech art between two world wars. The new situation in art after 1948; the art under ideology and outside it.
11. Streams and processes in the world art of the second half of the 20th century. Modern realism, abstraction, pop-art, action painting, new figuration, hyper-realism; performance etc.
12. The concept vs. traditional art fields and post-modernism in architecture.
13. Hopes and scepticism in present-day visual communication.
