Subject syllabus

- Basic knowledge and main terminology of metal corrosion, economic aspects of corrosion and corrosion protection.
- Electrochemical corrosion of metals, thermodynamics and kinetics, anodic and cathodic reactions, E-pH diagrams, Nernst equations, Faraday's laws.
- Uniform corrosion. Atmospheric corrosion, corrosion in waters and soils, Microbial corrosion.
- Local types of corrosion – pitting, crevice, intergranular, selective, stress corrosion cracking. Effects of wear.
- Corrosion properties of technically important metals and alloys (Fe, Ni, Cu, Zn, Al, Mg, Ti), corrosion rate comparison.
- Surface pre-treatment. Metal coatings, electrolytic (plating), diffusion and conversion layers,
- Cathodic protection, protection of storage devices (pipelines), stray currents, insulation.
- Influence of environment on plastic degradation (absorption, oxidation, embrittlement, radiation). Protection of polymeric materials.
- Corrosion of steel reinforcement in concrete, methods of protection. Concrete corrosion, basic types,
- Paints. Technology of application of coating systems, evaluation of their properties and defects.
- Chemical corrosion, oxidation at higher temperatures in gases, refractories, effects of reducing atmospheres with hydrogen.
- Hot sprays and their industrial use, principles, additives, used equipment, properties and testing
- Modern coating technology. PVD, CVD, laser and plasma use, ion implantation, nanotechnology.
- Corrosion protection testing according to ČSN, ISO, EN, ASTM, selected methods, thickness determination, coating adhesion.
- Tests and monitoring of corrosion, polarization methods. Examples of corrosion and corrosion protection from practice.
