Subject syllabus

1. Overview of melting and casting methods for advanced materials production.
2. Processing methods of superalloys, Ti based alloys and refractory metals alloys: vacuum induction melting, vacuum arc remelting, directional solidification.
3. Processing method of intermetallics: vacuum induction melting, ExoMelt process, mechanical alloying. Process parameters, effect on the material properties.
4. Thermal spray processes: plasma, flame and electric arc spraying. Effect of process variables on microstructure features. Coating materials. Thermal treatment of coatings, mechanical modifications of surfaces. Ospray process.
5. Plasma metallurgy. Application plasma technologies in refining process of nonferrous metals, preparation of alloys and intermetallics.
6. Physical vapor deposition, fundamental, coating materials, thin films characterisation. Evaporation, sputtering, ion-plating, ion implantation. Effect of process variables on microstructure features.
7. Chemical vapor deposition, fundamental, coating materials. Diamond and multicomponent layers technologies.
8. Processing of composite materials. Fundamentals of technologies. Effect of process variables on microstructure features.
9. Hydrogen in preparation and treatment of alloys. Modification of microstructure features of Ti based alloys. Hydrogen-induced amorphization of intermetallics.
10. Processing methods of metallic foams. Overview and comparison of methods. Effect of process variables on microstructure features. Examples of materials.
11. Electron beam melting. Application in preparation and refining of alloys.
12. Laser melting technologies in metallurgy, surface treatment and alloying of alloys.
