Subject syllabus

1. Introduction – potentially hazardous properties of nanomaterials.
2. Occurence of nanomaterials in the environment – their origin and sources emitting nanomaterials. Indoor and workplace nanomaterials.
3. Environmental risks – air, water and soil pollution – case studies.
4. Environmental fate of nanomaterials in single coponents of the environment.
5. Life cycle assessment (LCA). Nanomaterials as wastes.
6. Exposure to nanomaterials – exposure measurements, nanomaterials intake by organisms, cellular intake, translocation within an organism, biotransformation, bioaccumulation, deposition in single parts of an organism.
7. Types of interaction with biosystems on molecular and cellular level.
8. Impact of nanomaterials on tissue and organ levels. Genotoxic effects, oxidative stress.
9. In vitro and in vivo toxicity assessment of nanomaterials.
10. Ekotoxicity of nanomaterials.
11. Inhalation toxicity – case study.
12. Health impact of nanomaterials, occupational safety.
13. Safe by design strategies in design and development of nanomaterials. Ekofriendly alternatives of selected nanomaterials.
14. Ethical aspects of nanomaterials usage. Legislative framework of nanomaterials usage.
