Subject syllabus

Heterogeneous catalytic reactions. Mechanism of action of catalysts, types of catalysts, adsorption, chemisorption. Factors affecting catalytic reactions, nature of catalytic complexes. Structure of catalytically active sites, catalysis on metals and non-metals, acid-base catalysis. Properties of technical catalysts, catalytic poisons, deactivation, promoters, activity, selectivity.
Kinetics of heterogeneous catalytic reactions. Definition of catalytic reaction rate, rate equations used in heterogeneous catalysis, Langmuir-Hinshelwood mechanism, Mars-van Krevelen mechanism. Procedures for deriving model mechanisms, reaction rate control step, steady state approximation.
Transport phenomena in heterogeneous catalysis. Influence of internal and external diffusion on the course of the catalytic reaction, diffusion in porous catalysts, effective diffusion coefficient, effective thermal conductivity, external heat and mass transfer coefficients.
Laboratory research on kinetics. Experimental laboratory reactors, procedure for finding a new catalyst, indication of the influence of macrokinetic properties, design of kinetic experiments, processing of experimental kinetic data.
Catalyst design strategy for a specific process. Possibilities of targeted influence on catalyst efficiency by choice of size, geometry, porous structure of the catalyst and distribution of active sites.
Environmental catalysis. The use of heterogeneous catalysis to reduce pollution from stationary and mobile sources.
