Summary

The course discusses the history and contemporary forms of industrial architecture and the possibilities of brownfield regeneration. Industrial architecture reflects the specific technologies of individual fields. The process of brownfield regeneration is understood from the perspective of urban planning, function and construction.
Professional Knowledge: The student is familiar with the basic concepts, typology and characteristics of brownfields and understands the causes of their emergence in the context of urban development, industrialisation and the transformation of urban structures. The student is familiar with the history and contemporary forms of industrial and agricultural architecture and understands the relationship between technology, function, construction and architectural form. The student is familiar with the basic methods of urban, architectural, technical and environmental analysis of brownfields, including contamination and environmental risks. The student understands the possibilities of brownfield regeneration and conversion, as well as land-use planning instruments, economic and institutional instruments for regeneration, and the use of digital tools for brownfield documentation and analysis. The student is familiar with the basic principles of contemporary architecture in historic industrial environments and with examples of brownfield regeneration in the Czech Republic and abroad.
Professional Skills: The student is able to identify and characterise a brownfield from an urban, architectural, functional, technical and environmental perspective. The student is able to carry out a basic analysis of a brownfield, assess its relationship to the surrounding area and identify valuable elements of industrial heritage. The student is able to assess basic options for the preservation, removal, conversion or adaptive reuse of existing buildings and sites and to formulate alternative options for their future use. When developing a regeneration proposal, the student is able to take into account structural, technical, environmental, economic and land-use planning conditions. The student is able to use available digital tools for the documentation and analysis of brownfields and, based on the analyses carried out, formulate and professionally justify a basic urban and architectural concept for brownfield regeneration.
General Competences: The student is able to independently and critically assess complex problems associated with brownfield regeneration and to integrate their urban, architectural, technical, environmental and economic aspects. The student is able to work with a range of information sources, formulate and defend their own professional conclusions, and solve professional tasks both independently and as part of a team. The student is able to take into account the principles of sustainable development, the protection of cultural and industrial heritage, and the responsible management of land and urban areas when making decisions concerning their future transformation.
