Water in the Public Space of Settlements

Summary

Water is an essential part of human life and its use can be found in a wide range of sectors. Water itself has a major impact on urban planning, construction and architecture of human settlements and creates their integral part. Nevertheless it is necessary to cope with its destructive or harmful effects simultaneously in conjunction with the global climate change, which induces the occurrence of extreme meteorological phenomena, which leads to the situation that today's urbanised areas and open landscapes faces with drought, on the one hand, and enormous amounts of torrential rainfall, on the other. The subject is intended to confirm the fundamental importance of water and its management for society and the environment. Students will be introduced into the general occurrence of water in landscapes and settlements and its impact on constructions. In particular, the aim of the course is to introduce students to the interrelated wide range of activities of civil engineers in the water management processes, to introduce them current trends and benefits of water management measures in open and urbanized landscapes, including the implementation of large hydraulic structures.
