Subject syllabus

1) Introductory lecture – history of the use of alternative materials, standards and specifications
2) Colliery spoil and other products from mining and mineral processing
3) Metallurgical by-products (blast furnace slag, steel slag, slags from the production of non-ferrous metals) used as fill and aggregates
4) Metallurgical by-products (blast furnace slag, steel slag, non-ferrous metal slag) for the production of cement, concrete and binders
5) Coal Combustion Products used as fill and aggregates
6) Coal Combustion Products and their use in cement, concrete and grouts
7) Flue gas desulphurisation gypsum and its application (cement, sulphate binders, plasterboard)
8) Products of combustion of other materials (biomass, paper sludge, municipal waste, sewage sludge, oil shale) and their use in civil engineering
9) Recycled materials (recycled concrete, recycled bricks and masonry, recycled bound and unbound mixtures, mixed recycled material, recycled ballast) and their use in civil engineering (concrete, recycled aggregate, earthworks)
10) Tyres and shredded tyres, plastics and their use in civil engineering
11) Recycled glass and other waste glass products
12) Other alternative materials – foundry materials, phosphogypsum, lime and cement kiln dust, spent oil shale, excavated soils and rocks with an emphasis on tunnel muck
13) Materials for the production of lightweight construction materials (natural and artificial)
