Summary
Within the course *History of Construction and Architecture, students will be introduced to the chronological development of European architecture from Antiquity to the mid-20th century. The course focuses on the main architectural styles, their characteristic features, developmental transformations, and regional specificities, including the architecture of the Czech lands in an international context. Attention is also paid to the development of building typologies, structural systems, construction technologies, and building materials, as well as to the transformation of architectural expression in individual historical periods.
Learning outcomes:
- the student explains the chronological development of European architecture from Antiquity to the mid-20th century,
- identifies and characterizes the main architectural styles and their regional specificities,
- demonstrates orientation in key architects and significant works of individual historical periods,
- describes the development of building typologies, structural systems, and construction materials in their historical context,
- classifies architectural and building heritage according to style and approximately dates selected examples,
- interprets and evaluates the architectural quality of historical buildings with regard to their cultural, technological, and social context,
- applies acquired knowledge in the independent analysis of architecture in the Czech lands within an international context.
