Summary
The course serves as an introduction to the issues of urbanism and spatial planning for students of civil engineering. The aim of the course is to introduce the basic principles of spatial arrangement of settlements, the functioning of spatial planning in the Czech Republic and the relationship between technical, spatial and economic aspects of territorial development. Students will become familiar with the structure of the planning system in connection with the new Building Act, with spatial planning tools (spatial development policy, principles of spatial development, spatial and regulatory plans), with the process of their acquisition and use of spatial planning documents. An important part of the course is the understanding of the urban structure of settlements, the basic principles of spatial regulation, the organization of public spaces and the typology of development.
Furthermore, attention is paid to the principles of designing and functioning of public spaces as key elements of the urban structure, a basic overview of transport, technical, blue-green and civic infrastructure and their coordination with planned development. Students will also understand the basics of urban economics, the influence of spatial planning on investment costs, suburbanization, land values, and the spatial context of economic development. The course also includes a brief overview of the development of urbanization of settlements and theoretical approaches that influence the shape of contemporary cities (e.g. compact city, 15-minute city, new urbanism, resilient city).
Lectures are given in the form of explanations with an emphasis on active student participation and discussion of specific examples from practice. Students are expected to prepare for individual topics. The course concludes with a written test.
