Subject syllabus

1. Fauvism, the first revolution of the 20th century; Primitivism and Matisse’s art of balance.
2. Cubism and the attack on mimetic representation; Pablo Picasso, from Cubism to Neoclassical pastiche.
3. Two forms of German Expressionism: Die Brücke and Der Blaue Reiter; Worringer’s concept of abstraction and empathy; Expressionism in architecture and film.
4. Futurism: the art of the future as an instrument of social change.
5. Dada as an expression of social resistance and a formal revolution in art.
6. Marcel Duchamp: the artwork without the artist.
7. Art in the shadow of the Bolshevik Revolution: from Suprematism through Constructivism to Socialist Realism.
8. De Stijl and formalist tendencies in the art of the first half of the 20th century.
9. Metaphysical painting and Surrealism.
10. From engineering structures to the International Style. Developments in modern architecture during the first half of the 20th century.
11. Sculpture in the first half of the 20th century: Primitivism, the aesthetic honesty of “direct carving,” Vorticism, and geometric and organic abstraction.
12. Art on the eve of World War II: the avant-garde versus propaganda, the International Exposition in Paris, and the “Degenerate Art” exhibition in Munich in 1937.
13. Overview of the development of Czech visual art in the first half of the 20th century and its European context.
