Summary

The series of lectures and seminars traces the development of visual art from the beginning of the 20th century to the outbreak of World War II. It provides an overview of the most significant artistic movements and examines their foundations in the intellectual context of the period.
The course explores the “triumph of modernism” as well as the so-called crisis of the image, anti-art, abstraction as the most realistic form of art, art of the machine age, art and propaganda, artworks without artists, and other related topics. At the same time, it examines various models of interpretation, ranging from social history and psychoanalysis to formalism and structuralism.
