Graduates of this course will be able to describe the development, classification, design, and operating principles of aircraft piston engines, including spark-ignition and compression-ignition engines. They will be able to explain engine operating cycles, interpret a PV diagram, and describe the function of valve trains, reduction gears, and auxiliary drive housings. Graduates will be able to analyze the operation of lubrication, fuel, cooling, ignition, and starting systems and assess their impact on engine operational reliability. They will be able to evaluate the effects of altitude, supercharging, and fuel correction on engine performance and assess the principles of engine installation into the aircraft airframe and fire protection measures. Graduates will be able to independently formulate and defend expert opinions and make technically sound decisions when evaluating the design, function, and operation of aircraft piston engines.
