Upon completion of this course, students will be able to describe the historical development, classification, design, and operating principles of rocket, bleless, and bladed jet engines. They will be able to explain the operating cycles of single-shaft, multi-shaft, and bypass engines and interpret their PV diagrams. Graduates will be able to analyze the function of the inlet and outlet systems, the compressor, the combustion chamber, the turbine, and the afterburner system. They will be able to assess the operation of the fuel, starting, lubrication, cooling, de-icing, and fire suppression systems and evaluate their impact on engine safety and reliability. Graduates will be able to independently formulate and defend expert opinions and make technically sound decisions when evaluating the design, function, and operation of aircraft jet engines.
