Upon successful completion of the course, students will be able to identify the radio navigation systems used in civil aviation, describe the operating principles of ground-based and satellite navigation systems, and explain the functions of NDB, VOR, DME, ILS, MLS, radar systems, GNSS, Area Navigation (RNAV), Performance-Based Navigation (PBN), Required Navigation Performance (RNP), and Flight Management Systems (FMS), as well as their contribution to the safe conduct of flight.
Students will be able to apply radio navigation principles to model navigation situations, propose appropriate navigation methods using available radio navigation aids, and evaluate the suitability of individual navigation systems with regard to the type of flight, operational conditions, and applicable aviation regulations.
Students will be able to independently conduct the resolution of model navigation tasks, justify the selection of navigation systems and procedures based on their technical characteristics and operational limitations, take responsibility for decision-making during navigation planning, and evaluate operational risks associated with the use of radio navigation systems.
Successful completion of the course forms part of the theoretical training for the Airline Transport Pilot Licence (ATPL). The course is based on Module 062 – Radio Navigation and provides the knowledge and skills required for the theoretical examinations leading to the issue of the Airline Transport Pilot Licence (ATPL) by the Civil Aviation Authority of the Czech Republic.
