Subject syllabus

1. The Solar System, the shape of the Earth, circumference and diameter.
2. The Earth, the Earth’s magnetic field, direction, angle, compass heading.
3. Coordinate systems. Latitude and longitude, change of latitude and longitude.
4. Aeronautical charts – ICAO charts.
5. Units, measurement of directions and distances on aeronautical charts.
6. Time. Basic navigation concepts and elements of flight.
7. Pilotage (visual navigation). VFR flight planning.
8. Radiotelephony and communication.
9. General principles of radio wave propagation and frequency allocation.
10. Air Traffic Control abbreviations, Q-code groups, message categories.
11. Transmission of letters, numbers and time in aviation.
12. Standard words and phrases. En-route procedures under VFR.
13. Loss of communication – procedures for VFR flights.
14. Distress and urgency procedures.
