Equipment Safety in Nuclear Power Engineering

Summary

Students will be able to convert and interpret basic dose quantities and apply the ALARA principle when planning simple work tasks involving ionizing radiation. They will distinguish between deterministic and stochastic effects of radiation and estimate the risk of exposure for common scenarios. They will learn to propose basic measures to minimize doses in medical and occupational settings, compile a simple exposure monitoring plan, and categorize workplaces according to radiation risk. They will master basic procedures for the safe handling, storage, and recording of radionuclides and describe the principles of radioactive waste and spent fuel management. They will be able to classify a radiation emergency at the level of basic analysis and propose initial response measures; they will also prepare documentation for the assessment of minor technical changes from the point of view of radiation safety. They will gain an understanding of the principles of physical protection of nuclear materials and basic PWR/VVER safety systems, including the concept of defense in depth.
